Shadowlands is the thrilling first installment in the brand-new series by bestselling author Kate Brian. If you are into suspense, mystery, and serial killers, then this might be the book for you!
Synopsis
While walking home from school, teenager Rory Miller is attacked by brutal and seasoned serial killer Steven Nell. Rory survives the attack and is forced into witness protection with her father and sister Darcy.
As a result of the attack, Rory experiences post-traumatic episodes that continue even when the family is safely established in Juniper Landing, a picturesque island vacation town far away from the brutal past events in Rory’s life. Rory and Darcy make friends immediately with the local teens on the island, where surfing and a low-key lifestyle are the priorities.
Life at Juniper Landing seems perfect, but Rory is still plagued by the memory of Steven Nell. She tries to get on with her life and put the past behind her--until one of her new friends goes missing.
My Thoughts
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and it only took me a few hours to read. The opening chapter, told from the serial killer’s mind, sucked me right into the story and never let me go.
There were certain points in this book where I questioned the validity of what was happening, but this is a fiction title and I didn’t dwell on those moments. I understand why Brian had to write the situation this way (it leads to the big twist) but it perhaps could have been written more realistically. This big twist is revealed in the last sentence and is slightly shocking.
To me, the mark of a great book is wanting to read the sequel, even if there is no sequel planned. Fortunately, this is book one in the series and the second book, Hereafter, is already out. The library is currently processing both Shadowlands and Hereafter and they should be available to you within the month! See Ms. Grande or Ms. Lee to put these titles on hold.
Happy Reading,
Ms. Grande :-)
